It's been almost a month since the last video blog. Here's a quick video about some of the possibilities offered by TR-069 in the DOCSIS space.
I took a moment after the 2011 Incongito Global User conference to chat with Mauro Di Fluri, Senior Product Manager to get his thoughts and observations on the IPv6 imperative.
If you were not at this year's National Cable Show, you missed some great exposure to IPv6 in the Windy City. At the Incognito booth was an overview and demonstration of Broadband Command Center 6.0. BCC 6 delivers all IPv6 related provisioning features for DOCSIS and PacketCable networks. IPv6 is clearly the front burner topic for our industry. A half-day IPv6 Summit preceded this year's Cable Show. It featured a wide range of executives from the Internet community, technology companies, service providers, content providers and government. The topic remained live throughout the three-day show, including a Network Address Translation (NAT) 444 demonstration at the CableNET exhibit. (Read More)
World IPv6 Day (June 8, 2011) came and went. Not a lot was noticed on this global test day, which the Internet Society sponsored and hundreds of companies supported. That is a good thing. Things that were intended to happen did happen. On company web sites that ought to have been IPv6-enabled with support to convey a connection over IPv6, there were native v6 conversations.
What did I do personally on the Day? I looked I at new drafts for work coming out from the IETF around extensions to DHCPv6 related to mobile technology and mobile EAP authentication technology. (Read More)
As we learned last month during our LightReading webinar, IP over Ethernet access networks are really the beginning of an alignment in how the edge network is playing a new role at the subscriber level. (Read More)
This is the second part of my IPTV series, in the first part I outlined some of the technical problems associated with bringing video services to the consumer. Now I share our approach to Broadband World Forum's Auto Configuration Service.
Most cable operators are experienced with the concepts and the benefits of centralized provisioning and management of modems and MTAs based on DOCSIS and PacketCable standards. Broadband Forum offers similar ability to centrally provision and manage devices terminating the operator network and presenting service to the customer. Home gateways based on these standards further enable operators to move past the modem, into the home, supporting IP Set Top boxes, IP Phones, IP network attached storage (whole home DVR), and WLAN services (WiFi management). The Broadband Forum defines a management application known as an Auto Configuration Service (ACS), which modems, gateways and devices of many access networks may register with for provisioning and ongoing management operations. This is the first part of a two part series on bringing IPTV to the consumer.
We started 2010 thinking the year of the gateway was upon us. Now in fourth quarter, vendors are beginning to show product.
What that product is seems to vary by region. Europe, in a much more open video architecture to include satellite and numerous conditional access solutions, leads the pack in new Hybrid video and IP set top boxes offering whole home networking. North America market takes on a more converged digital cable set top home gateway feeling. (Read More)
